What is ABA therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis, also known as ABA, is a type of therapy that is utilized to develop or change behaviors. ABA therapy instructs children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other behavioral or developmental problems via the breaking down of complicated tasks into smaller instructional steps. Some of the behaviors it develops include waiting, making friends, communicating needs, asking for assistance, following directions and performing tasks.

Does ABA therapy take long to work?

The most recent research in ABA therapy shows that children affected by ASD who receive intensive ABA services for approximately one to three years show significant improvements across multiple domains. Focused ABA services are comprised of programs which consist of 10-25 hours of services that are focused on a limited number of targets to be improved.

Should ABA therapy be completed outside the home?

ABA services may be done in homes, schools, within communities or in clinics. The most effective services tend to be those that are home, school and community based. This is due to the fact that the educational opportunities for daily living skills will arise naturally in the child’s environment, allowing for skills to be developed in the places and around the people where they are needed the most.

ABA therapy has been proven to help children who have deficits in behavior, communication, social and adaptive living.
