Alameda and how it can make
a difference for your family.

What is ABA therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the most common therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It is based on the science of behavior and learning. ABA treatment tactics reduce socially unacceptable behaviors by breaking down goals into teachable steps and rewarding positive behaviors. Therapy also teaches children new skills, such as communication and life skills.

How long will my child need ABA therapy?

Typically, long-lasting results come from between one to three years of therapy. Programs are usually 20 hours a week. The duration of therapy depends on a child's progress and the type of program. Some programs focus on key functional skills, while others cover a more comprehensive range of behaviors and skills. You and your provider can decide on the goals you’d like your child to attain and work to meet those goals over a series of therapy sessions.

Where should ABA therapy occur?

Your child's therapist will talk to you about where his or her inappropriate behavior occurs. Therapy can take place at home, in school or at a clinic. At home therapy allows the parents to take part and learn more about the process, so most therapists include it as part of the treatment plan. Families are an integral part of the child's success.

Will ABA therapy work for my child?

Several studies from the National Autism Center show ABA teaches children new skills and reduces problem behavior. Other studies show intensive, consistent therapy beginning before age four can produce large developmental gains. While every child with an autism spectrum disorder is unique, the scientific support for ABA is overwhelmingly positive.
