What is ABA therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a form of therapy that is used to either improve or change targeted behaviors in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is most often used to treat children with ASD and other behavior disorders how to break down complicated tasks into more manageable steps. It’s used to effectively treat communication, social and behavioral issues that are commonly present in children with these disorders. These issues include asking for help, following directions, attending to tasks, making friends, waiting and communicating needs.

How long Is a typical ABA therapy program?

The amount of time needed for ABA therapy depends on the child’s unique needs. Current research conducted on the subject suggests that those who receive one to three years of intensive ABA therapy services show a number of improvements and gains in a multitude of different areas. Focused ABA therapy services tend to take around 10-25 hours and only focus on a few targeted skill areas.

Should ABA therapy be done at home?

ABA services have been shown to be more effective when they are done within the home, school or community environments. This allows a child with ASD to learn the skills that they most need to learn in order to function within their normal daily lives.
