Chesapeake and how it can make
a difference for your family.

What's the objective of ABA therapy?

The objective of applied behavior analysis, or ABA therapy, is to change or improve inappropriate behaviors in children who have been diagnosed with developmental and behavioral disorders. By reducing complex tasks to small, instructional steps, children learn behavioral adjustments in areas such as attention span, asking for help, making friends, communicating their needs, and following directions.

What's the duration of ABA therapy?

Each child is evaluated to determine their current status and the level of improvement that they need, so there's no set time frame allotted for their program. Usually, though, an ABA therapy regimen that lasts between one and three years and encompasses multiple areas of work will achieve the most satisfactory long-term results. Focused ABA therapy can target a limited number of domains with between 10 and 25 hours of therapy and is often very successful.

Can ABA therapy be done at home?

ABA therapy that's conducted in the natural settings of the child’s home, school or community is often more successful because maladaptive behaviors most frequently occur in the child's natural surroundings. This also enables the child to learn independent interaction in their familiar environment, which increases their ability to practice and improve daily living skills.

How will ABA therapy be helpful for my child?

If your child exhibits maladaptive behaviors that impair their ability to function and interact within familiar environments or within social settings, then ABA therapy may be helpful. The objective of ABA therapy is to improve your child's ability to interact independently with their surroundings and improve their social skills, thereby reducing maladaptive behaviors.
