What is ABA therapy?

ABA is an acronym for Applied Behavior Analysis. It’s a type of therapy used since the 1960s to help children with autism. The flexible therapy model can increase good behaviors in children and decrease ones that hinder learning. ABA’s primary focus is positive reinforcement for small steps that are part of a complex task, such as getting ready in the morning.

Where does ABA therapy typically take place?

ABA therapy can take place in the home, at your child's school, or at a location in the community. Home ABA therapy has several advantages. If your child needs to work on daily living skills, such as hygiene, home is the ideal place to learn these skills where he or she will use them. It also lets parents and siblings learn how to apply the therapy. If your child needs top work on socialization with others, school or community therapy will give them this option.
