What is ABA therapy?
ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. ABA therapy is an evidence-based method that focuses on teaching children with developmental and behavioral disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD), how to break down complicated tasks into smaller steps. Skills that can be improved or changed via this method include waiting, communicating needs, making friends, asking for assistance, following instructions and completing tasks, among others.

The length of time that ABA therapy takes depends on the individual needs of the child. Recent research shows that children receiving intensive ABA therapy services for one to three years make significant long-term gains across multiple skill areas. Focused ABA therapy services last for around 10-25 hours and address a limited number of specifically targeted skill areas.

Research has shown that ABA treatment provided in a home, school or community-based setting is more effective.
