What is ABA therapy?

ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. ABA therapy is an evidence-based method that focuses on teaching children with developmental and behavioral disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD), how to break down complicated tasks into smaller steps. Skills that can be improved or changed via this method include waiting, communicating needs, making friends, asking for assistance, following instructions and completing tasks, among others.

Is ABA therapy going to take a long time?

The length of time that ABA therapy takes depends on the individual needs of the child. Recent research shows that children receiving intensive ABA therapy services for one to three years make significant long-term gains across multiple skill areas. Focused ABA therapy services last for around 10-25 hours and address a limited number of specifically targeted skill areas.

Will my child’s ABA therapy be completed at home?

ABA treatment can be done in a clinic setting. It can also be done at home, at school or within the community. Research has shown that ABA treatment provided in a home, school or community-based setting is more effective. This is because it allows daily living skills to be taught within the environment that they are most likely to be needed in.
