Learn more about ABA therapy in
Newport News and how it can make
a difference for your family.

What does ABA therapy entail?

Applied behavioral analysis, or ABA therapy, achieves improvement in maladaptive behaviors in children who have behavioral disorders. It works by reducing complicated tasks into small steps that are easily understood by the child and providing reinforcement or rewards. It's been effective in areas such as asking for help, communicating needs, following directions, increasing the attention span, waiting, and making friends.

What's the treatment duration of ABA therapy?

Each child is evaluated to determine their skills and needs and their ABA therapy is based on the results of their evaluation. Typically, an ABA therapy program lasts between one and three years and addresses a broad spectrum of domains. Focused ABA therapy provides between 10 and 25 hours of treatment on a few specific targets.

Will ABA therapy need to be done at a clinic?

Although a clinical setting is sometimes used, research has indicated that ABA therapy is more effective when done in a natural environment, such as the home, the community or the school. This enables the child to learn independent interaction in situations that are specific to their life and lifestyle, and it greatly reduces the incidence of maladaptive behaviors across multiple domains.
