The basics of ABA therapy
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to changing and improving a variety of behaviors. Backed by years of research, ABA can help children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) improve behaviors such as following directions, forming friendships, waiting, and communicating needs and emotions. This therapeutic intervention uses the principles of positive reinforcement and learning to help children break down complicated tasks into manageable steps.
Learn moreHow long should my child receive ABA therapy?
How long a child receives ABA therapy is based on his or her unique needs and specific behavioral goals, so there isn't an answer that works for everyone. Through extensive research, we've learned that long-lasting gains are achieved through a period of one to three years. Successful, targeted ABA treatment programs focus on a small number of behaviors to improve for children with ASD, usually consisting of around 10 to 25 hours total.
Learn moreWhere can ABA therapy be provided?
In addition to clinical settings, ABA services can be provided in the community, at school or at home. Most successful treatment programs teach skills to children in settings where they are naturally used, such as school, home or within the community. This is often where the most improvement is needed and provides children with the tools needed to apply the skills they learn in a real-world situation.
Learn moreWhat are the advantages of ABA therapy?
ABA therapy can help children with ASD reduce harmful or unwanted behaviors while promoting positive behavioral skills. The idea is to build skills that can help them learn to live independently and function in most of their daily environments. Your child's ABA therapist will develop a treatment plan that targets specific skills and behaviors that are important to you and your child.
