What is ABA therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is a method of treatment that is based on scientific evidence. It focuses on improving and changing behaviors in individuals impacted by different behavioral disorders, like autism spectrum disorder (ASD), by teaching those individuals how to distill complicated tasks into smaller steps that are easier for them to perform. ABA therapy treatment has been proven to assist children with ASD in communicating their needs, developing friendships, waiting, asking for assistance, following directions and completing tasks.

Will ABA therapy take awhile?

The timeframe for this therapy is difficult to determine. This is because each treatment plan is individualized for each child’s unique needs. Current research has shown that children who receive one to three years of intensive ABA therapy treatment services make significant progress in multiple skill areas. Children who receive focused ABA therapy treatment services are able to make improvements in a few targeted skill areas via programming that lasts between 10-25 hours.

Can ABA therapy take place at home?

The most current research in ABA therapy has shown that it is most effectively delivered at home, in school or within the community. This is due to the fact that children with ASD can learn essential life skills best when they are taught in the environments in which they need to utilize those skills.
