What should I know about ABA therapy?
Applied behavior analysis, abbreviated as ABA, is a therapeutic intervention designed to reduce maladaptive behaviors and increase desirable behaviors in children who have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ABA therapy is backed by research studies and can help improve a variety of skills, including classroom learning, communication and social skills. This behavioral therapy teaches children by breaking down large tasks into smaller steps that are easier to manage.

Factors such as the behaviors needing modification and the age of the child strongly influence the length of an ABA treatment program. Researchers have found that receiving intensive ABA therapy for a period of one to three years is the most effective for children with ASD. There are also high-intensity, extensive programs which typically provide 10-25 hours of ABA therapy each week.
