What does ABA therapy mean?

Applied behavioral analysis, or ABA therapy, is an empirical method of behavioral adaptation that can change or improve targeted behaviors in children or other developmental disorders. The therapy uses positive reinforcement and praise. Areas of improvement include attention span, asking for help, communicating their needs, making friends, following directions, and waiting.

What's the time frame for an ABA therapy program?

Each child is evaluated to determine their current skill level and the areas that need improvement. Their ABA therapy is based on the results of their evaluation, so the time for the program will be unique to each child. Research has found that a broad-spectrum program that lasts between one and three years yields optimum results in the long term. Shorter, focused programs that provide between 10 and 25 hours of therapy are effective for modifying a few specific areas.

Do ABA therapy sessions have to take place in a clinical setting?

ABA therapy is frequently most effective when it takes place in the familiar environments of the community, the home, or the school since these locations are most frequently where Inappropriate behaviors occur. This also allows the child to develop living skills in the environments with which they are most familiar and which may require specialized daily living skills.
