What is ABA therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is an evidence-based therapeutic method utilized in the treatment of specific behaviors found within children with behavioral and developmental disorders like autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This treatment assists children in learning how to simplify complicated tasks by turning them into small and discrete instructional steps. ABA treatment services have been utilized in addressing and improving behaviors such as making friends, waiting, communicating needs, asking for help, following instructions and attending to tasks.

How long does ABA therapy generally take?

Significant research in the field shows that children who receive intensive ABA treatment services over the course of one to three years can make significant gains across multiple skill areas. Focused ABA treatment consists of programs that teach the child for a period of 10-25 hours. These types of ABA services focus on a limited number of skill areas to improve upon.

Can ABA therapy be completed in a clinical setting?

ABA therapy can be delivered effectively in the home, school or community. It can also be done in a clinic. However, studies indicate that it is most effective when done at home, school or in the community. This is because children with ASD or behavioral disorders are better able to learn and apply essential skills for daily living while they are within the environment in which they are most likely to use those skills.
