What is regressive autism?

Regressive autism is when a child appears to be on a typical development path, then suddenly begins to lose their communication and/or socialization skills. Think of it like a snowball rolling down a mountain – it keeps going faster and growing bigger until it seems impossible to reverse its course. 

For children with autism, the impact of regression can be far-reaching. For instance, Autism Parenting reports that 77% of children who suffer language loss also experience loss in non-verbal communication skills. 

What causes this to happen? A study published in the Journal of Autism and Development Disorders found that children with developmental delays are more likely to regress after a change in their environment – such as the school year ending, moving to a new home, divorce, or the death of a loved one.
