Stay Healthy, Stay Happy! Flu Season Hacks
November 13, 2024
As we roll into the holiday season this a friendly reminder to all our families that we are also hitting flu season. The flu season typically falls between the start of fall and the end of spring. Adults and children are both susceptible to the influenza virus. An infected person could be contagious from day 1 to 5 to 7 days after symptoms begin.
Common symptoms of flu are:
· Fever
· Cough
· Sore throat
· Runny or stuffy nose
· Muscle or body aches
· Headaches
· Fatigue
· Some people may experience vomiting and diarrhea, although this is more commonly seen in children.
If your child experiences any of these symptoms, please follow Butterfly Effect’s Sick and Illness Policy to keep everyone healthy and happy!
Important hygiene and safety skills to practice this season:
Hand Washing:
Consult with your BCBA if you think your child would benefit from a handwashing visual like the one below.
Blowing Their Nose: Consult with your BCBA on how to break down the steps of blowing their nose such as below:
- Hold tissue to nose
- Press on one nostril
- Blow out of the other nostril
- Repeat
- Throw tissue away
- Wash hands
Some children have difficulty physically blowing out of their nose. You can practice this by modeling, using a mirror and have them make the mirror fog by blowing air out of their nose, or practicing feeling the warm air come out of their nose.
Covering Coughs and Sneezes:
- Practice covering a cough or a sneeze by modeling and role playing with your child.
- Say “Do this” and model putting your mouth/ nose to your inner elbow and pretending to cough
- The child will then copy you. You may have to provide assistance.
- Provide positive reinforcement such as saying “Yes, good job covering your mouth!” and give a high five.
Cleaning Surfaces:
Surprisingly, many children love to help around the house! This flu season is the perfect opportunity to have your child help with wiping down tables and counter tops. Choose a child-friendly cleaning solution and let them have at it!
Our team here at Butterfly Effects wishes you all a safe, healthy and happy holiday season.
