Visual Schedules
August 2, 2024
To ease our busy minds we frequently rely on reminders, schedules, and calendars to organize our daily tasks. This allows us to preview events or tasks that need to be completed each day and provides some predictability on what to expect for the day ahead. Just like everyone else, children with autism benefit from following visual schedules for the same reasons. Visual schedules can look different and be individualized for each child.
Types of Visual Schedules:
- Picture schedule
- Written checklist
- Virtual calendar
What are some benefits of using a visual schedule?
- Helps build routines
- Increases predictability
- Can be used across environments (home, community, school)
- Increases opportunities to work on transitions between events
- Increase independence with daily tasks
- Increase acquisition of new skills
What can a visual schedule be used for?
- Bedtime routines
- After school routines
- Mornings routines
- Community outings (shopping, doctors visits, social outings etc.)
- Breaking down steps to daily living tasks to increase independence
- Endless number of other multi-step skills
It is always important to incorporate reinforcement either throughout the visual schedule or at the end. This allows your child to access something motivating that will encourage them to want to do it again!
As the new school year approaches and schedule begin to change, it is a great opportunity to speak with your Clinical Team to determine if a visual schedule would be an appropriate support for your child!
